Creative Critical Reflection

Here it is: The Creative Critical Reflection for the film opening of Facing Survival

I wish I was able to make this video longer because I feel like there was so much I left out. Honestly, I had a really hard time editing it because after putting all the footage I had about 26 minutes, when I'm only allowed to have 10. Shortening the CCR took time, but finally I was left with the footage where I directly answered each question. I wanted to elaborate and bring more of my personality into the film, but unfortunately I couldn't.

Either way it is still a great culmination of the process in creating this opening, and I hope you enjoy it :) I just realized that this may be goodbye. I plan to come back on here next year when taking A Level of the Media Studies course, but until then I'll be taking a temporary leave of absence!

Also, sorry for the late post but the CCR took so much time to export that I didn't account for.

Facing Survival

I did it! Let me just say this has been an experience I will never forget. I had so much fun making this opening, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did. Also, spent the last couple of hours playing around with the sounds lol. You'll see what I mean, there are some funky sounds in it, but they fit perfectly!

Here it is:

The CCR, my final reflection should be up this week for you to view my thought process behind the creation of the opening!

Looking Back

Now as I finish up on the last details of the opening, I wanted to take some time to reflect back on the process. It's been an amazing journey in which I've learned so much. I remember how excited I was after being assigned this opening, and I never imagined how much work would go into making, but throughout the whole process I've never lost that excitement. Yes, I faced some struggles here and there but it was nothing major that negatively affected the outcome. So here we go:

The Spark
After our teacher mentioned the next big task we would take on which was the creation of a film opening, she showed our class some great examples of films that gave just enough context to pull you in, but not too much where it seemed overwhelming, or like you had seen the whole film already. This inspired me to create a storyline in which I could grasp the viewers attention within a short period of time, and this was ultimately my task. We saw some great examples form past students and full-film productions as well. Like the film, I Am Legend. I'd say this was probably my biggest inspiration, and wanted to create an opening similar to it. The film tells the story of a man who lives in a post-apocalyptic area, in which all the humans have died or been infected by this virus that turns them in vicious creatures. Although I didn't want to include any of these creatures, I did like the idea of a lone character who has to survive without the rest of humanity. So, that's where the idea sparked.

The Planning and Research
Then the planning began. I had to take this small idea and expand into something even better. I started with research of the genre; sci-fi. Honestly, I was surprised with my choice because I'd say that I don't typically watch many sci-fi films, and tend to drift more towards the romance or comedy genre. However, with this idea I would have to explore new territory and I'm happy I went with it. I began researching the technical things, such as background on the genre and the target audience as well, but before continuing I wanted to have more knowledge on sci-fi films. So, I took some recommendations from the Internet and friends and began watching. Each film was different, but they also had common characteristics such as ideas that defy scientific beliefs, including aliens, time travel, intelligent robots, and other futuristic elements. I watched films like Inception, Children of Men, The Matrix, and rewatched I Am Legend. Each of these films had some similarities, but what I found most important was they each had a unique theme that made the film special. Like in Inception, where a man has the ability to enter people's dreams and use that to his advantage to ultimately achieve the final goal of actually planting an idea into someone's head. I knew I would need a unique theme to my film opening that would make it different from the others. Of course I'd still include features that are classic within the genre, such as the use of futuristic tech, which is the device the main character wears on her head. But the idea that made my film unique was that this character was lost, with no knowledge of what had occurred. And in installments, she would slowly begin to realize what had caused the disappearance of all other humans, leaving her to be the survivor. Only to further realize throughout the film that she is only the guinea pig of an experiment, being controlled to believe whatever memories the device on her head triggers. This idea continued to develop even after I was done with the planning process of creating both the script and the storyboard. Until eventually it was time to film.

The Filming
I want to say that this was my absolute favorite part of the process, and probably the step in which I learned the most about myself. I think one of the most nerve-wracking parts for me was actually asking Silvana to be the actress in my opening, especially during this time. Before quarantine started, I had filmed some parts at the grocery store of empty shelves as essentials such as water and toilet paper quickly began to disappear. Then just a couple days into quarantine we went to the grocery store to get food and everyone was wearing masks. At this point I realized that I could make the cause for the end of the human race in the film, a pandemic. When I was first asked this question during a group discussion, I wasn't completely sure of what the cause would be, but I knew it'd have to be a catastrophic event. An idea like an explosion was suggested to me, but this would be difficult to recreate as I could only use special effects to do it. But that first day I went to the grocery store, it clicked for me. And filming these people in masks served as a way for me to also document what was occurring this year as something like this hasn't happened in years, and it hasn't seemed as major. So, at this point, I updated my story and finished filming all the "flashback/memory" scenes. All that was left was to film Silvana. Now this was a new experience for me as in all the other media projects I've done, I've been able to use friends or even myself as the actor. But this time I needed an actor that was older and in her 20's or 30's. So, first I talked to my mom and she mentioned being able to call Silvana so I could ask. This worked out perfectly in the end as she was happy to help me with the project, even when I told her we would have to re-film some parts. Throughout this time the project also underwent many changes as COVID-19 prevented us from doing certain things. One of these changes was in location. We could no longer drive out to a park or an empty city, as we had to try and stay close to home. Luckily, we were able to find the perfect place by her house. In just a couple hours, I had all the footage I needed.

Bringing it Together
All that was left was to put the footage together to create what I had envisioned for weeks. I began editing by looking through the footage I had and selecting the best takes. I tried filming each part two to three times that way I had more to work with. Then I started cutting clips to make them shorter and to fit smoothly with the next clip that played. Once everything was put together it was time to add the most important elements, effects and sounds. Now the effects weren't like special effects, it was more like a filter I created to put over each clip in which the character is outdoors to make the colors less bright, and to create an apocalyptic feel using darker tones and shades of blue. Then I applied a different filter to the clips that serve as flashbacks to make them a bit hazy and brighter. Then came sound. So for quite some time I had been looking for sounds, until I ran into a website named FreeSound. With this website I was able to access a library of sounds. After about an hour, I had found everything I needed to create the sci-fi feel. I added them in and the final step was complete. I had a my full film opening!

Overall, creating this opening was awesome experience that I'm so grateful for. I was able to see the extent of my skills that I hope to improve as I continue on this path of filmmaking.

Look out for the opening because it's coming your way!

Finished Editing

How's it going?

As I mentioned last post, I chose WeVideo to edit my opening, and I want to explain my choice because at first I was going to go with Adobe Premier Pro, and I'm sure most would've made gone with Premier. So, I took a day to play around with Adobe Premier Pro and began by importing some of my footage. I wanted to try and make that dark effect on a clip to create the sci-fi feel, but almost immediately I was lost. As you import footage, you are presented with many options on what you can do it, and I felt a bit overwhelmed. Learning how to do everything would've been great, but it would definitely take me time that I didn't have. That's why I chose to use We Video, and to this point I still haven't encountered any problems.

In fact, as I edited, I found an additional feature I didn't know WeVideo had to create the sci-fi feel I previously mentioned. Not only this, but once I found out I could add that effect, right away I knew how to apply it to all the clips that needed it. For me, WeVideo is a simple platform, and it may be because of how much experience I have with it, but it was just what worked the best for me on this project!

I think what took me the most during this editing process was adding in all the sound effects afterwards. However, they play such an important part in my film, especially since there is no dialogue. The film is composed of sound effects as well as the character's facial expressions. Thanks to FreeSound, a website where you can download free sound effects, I was able to put together everything I needed for my project. I did want to experiment with foley a bit and try to add some extra sounds, which I have a bit more time to do, so I'll bring an update if I do!

Here's a photo of the interface, just to share the general idea of how I search for each sound I'm looking for and then go through their large list of options. Thank you FreeSound!

A Set Storyline

Hello! It's been a while since I've given an update, but I've been hard at work.
So let's start; first I encountered some problems with the footage I had recorded once I began editing, and I don't think I've mentioned that I chose to use WeVideo to edit, but more on that in the next post. I had some inconsistencies in the footage, leaving me with no choice but to re-film certain parts.

After re-filming, I added new ideas to the opening that I wanted to include, thinking they'd make the story a bit more emotional. Because of that, I'd like to give a storyline update as well!

The general idea remains the same with my female main character being placed in a world where she seems to be the final survivor. She wakes up in an unfamiliar area with a device on her head that triggers memories, hinting at what happened in the past, leading her to the point she's in now. These memories include shots I took when going to the grocery store, of people in masks, and empty shelves as well. This is meant to show that a pandemic has occurred, however it isn't enough for the character to know how she survived. For that reason, the opening leaves out information that'll create a sense of mystery for the audience to continue watching the film. The plan is for the rest of the film to give more background on this character's life and what has happened to the world's population. Although, I did add a clip in which the main character is hugging her daughter and she is later seen in a mask, showing that she's also been affected by this disease that is hurting others. This brings in an emotional factor for the main character to continue exploring what has happened. Further than that the story line remains the same, but these were things I felt were essential to the opening, so I added them.

For the shots of the character with her daughter, I asked my younger cousin to help me. She was very excited to take part in it, and the film shows it. Here are two wholesome stills from that cute scene:

Now, time for what I learned:
I'm not sure if it's possible to avoid this "arising" of new ideas as I continue with the project, and I think I knew this was going to happen from the start because I remember making a post that gave the original storyline that way I wouldn't drift too far from it. But with any project, there are always going to be ways to improve and I don't think these ideas should be ignored, so I worked a bit harder to include them. Perhaps with better planning I may have avoided the extra work though. However, no matter how much work, I know I've enjoyed every bit of the process of creating this opening. And I hope you're just as excited as I am to see the results.

Adobe Premiere Pro or WeVideo?

Now it's time to choose between two editing softwares:

WeVideo or Adobe Premiere Pro ?

Now, both of these programs are made accessible to me and I see benefits in using both of them. For that reason, I'm finding it difficult to choose between the two. So, I decided to make a pro's and con's list to help me choose.

WeVideo

Pro's

  • Much experience using this platform
  • Can access it from different devices since it's online
  • Know what I can and can't do
  • Everything is set up in a simple manner
Con's
  • Doesn't have all the features that Premiere offers
  • May not be able to do everything I need as easily
  • Not very compatible with the sound effects I want to add, which are a crucial part of the video.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Pro's

  • More features made available, such as color correcting while with WeVideo I can only apply filters to each frame.
  • Used by many in the film industry, including the higher up Hollywood editors
  • Works with Photoshop, AfterEffects, and other Adobe programs that may offer more when it comes to color and graphic elements.

Con's
  • Have only used it once, and have little experience with it
  • More complex
  • Unsure if it'd be compatible with downloading and importing sound effects
  • Can only access it from the computer it's downloaded on

____________________________________________________

Overall, I've decided to play around with Adobe Premiere Pro tonight to see what I can do, and depending on how difficult it is to use, I will decide between the two to begin editing my opening. I don't want to rule out this video editing software because it can possible provide more than WeVideo does, however in the end I want to choose the program that I feel I'd work best with to create amazing results.

Learning Something New Part 2

Going into this project, I was extremely excited (still am), but I didn't realize how much I'd be learning, and not just about filmmaking but also about myself.

I'm just going to say it... I am a shy person. At first when getting to know people I can be a bit reserved and quiet, which is rare of me because all of my closest friends and family know how loud and crazy I can be. It's something natural, when I'm just getting to know someone or I'm not that comfortable around them yet, I'm automatically more quiet.

Now, Silvana has been a family friend for quite some time, and I do feel comfortable with her. However, to me it's different when I have to ask her to move around or redo something because I didn't want to seem demanding, but gradually as we kept filming, I realized that she didn't see it that way at all. When talking to actors, it's also good to be polite, but they don't see it as you being demanding if you ask them to do something because in the end, the director is the one with the vision, and the actor/actors work together to make it a reality.

So, what did I take away from this?
It's better to be more outgoing when getting to know someone because both of you want the same thing; to feel comfortable with each other. Especially when meeting an actor, you want them to feel free to talk to you about any concerns, so you have to make yourself available to them. By taking this situation, I learned something about myself and how I can improve as a filmmaker!

That's how it is, learning as I go!
See you next time.

Finished Filming

HELLO EVERYONE
GOOOOOOD NEWS!

As of yesterday I have finished filming the entire opening, and man was it AWESOME. So, as I mentioned before I was facing some struggles in filming because of all the precautions that need to be taken during this time. However, I was able to work around and meet with Silvana, my AMAZING actress by a grassy area in her neighborhood. When I originally had the idea, I envisioned a grassy, remote area. Similar to an empty park in my city that has hills and a bunch of grassland, but that park was closed due to COVID-19. Then a friend had suggested filming in an urban city area at an early time when it's empty. That's what I had my heart set on to really show that this character was in a completely abandoned area, but I couldn't film safely there either.

So, we had to improvise. When I talked to her I wanted to make sure that she was comfortable filming outside and mentioned that we couldn't go anywhere where we would encounter a bunch of people. As we brainstormed we came up with a location that looks much like the one I had originally wanted and trust me, it worked out perfectly. Just to show you, here a some sneak peeks of the opening:

These are just two cool shots to show the background location of the opening. And a little preview of how the character feels. I think the grass area alone works really well to create the setting for the film.

Anyway, now it's time to get to editing!
